Wandering in the cloud forest: INECOL'S Botanic Garden
Keen to spend our days at the park rather than crammed in a shopping centre, it wasn´t a surprise that we quickly found the local Botanic Garden. Located next to INECOL, a scientific centre dedicated for 35 years to the study of environmental issues, el Jardin Botanico for its name in Spanish, is probably one of the most pleasing public places in Xalapa.
The park is fairly quiet and not busy during the weekends. We came across Quinceanera and wedding photo shoots more than once. Picnics are permitted but no alcohol, dogs or balls.
The area is in constant renovation so we saw a few construction works on site, but fairly enough, the place is very beautiful and the trees are well looked after.
However, the place could do better with a more renovated tourist approach. It is a shame there is no proper cafe and comfortable sitting area, being the only offer just a small kitchen run by a lady who sells "tortas" and Nescafe. They are quite tasty though. There is a couple of clanky chairs and tables next to an epic view of the garden. So, my advice is pack some sandwiches and be prepared to walk along to find a spot, which are many!. There is a beautiful pond at the entrance with some sort of Japanese feel to it. and right across of it, a small shop that sells botanical books, wooden toys, local craft and surprisingly, Joules wellies.
Final recommendation, if visiting during the hot months, MAKE SURE MOSQUITO REPELLENT!
